Stratton, Maine. The Dead River Area Historical Society will open for the season on Saturday July 5th, and will be open every weekend during July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Opening Day July 5th will feature "Dead River Plantation: Gone But Not Forgotten." We always hear about the drowning of Flagstaff Village but did you know that Dead River Plantation, a neighboring village, was also drowned?
Hosting the museum will be Betty Safford Wyman and possibly her three sisters who grew up in Dead River Plantation. Their grandfather Russell Safford was town clerk and their dad Ben Safford was Watchman on Bigelow Mountain from 1924 - 1929. Their personal memorabilia will be on view that day. This is a perfect opportunity for those of you doing research.
Our special days are not presentations but a gathering of people knowledgeable about the feature subject. You will learn a lot by just listening to these folks talk to each other.
On display in the museum are artifacts, manuscripts, and photographs that have been donated or loaned by interested townspeople and descendants of original families of the Dead River Region. Collections from 1850 on include old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the "lost" towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families, and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
