The State of Maine, with it's spectacular rugged mountains and rockbound coastline, boasts a number of truly great climbing areas and trails. The majority of these trails are located in the Downeast-Acadia, Maine Highlands, and Western Mountains & Lakes Regions. Popular destinations include Mt. Katahdin, located in Baxter State Park (Maine's tallest Mountain and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail), and Acadia National Park, located on Mount Desert Island. Also within a 1-2 hour drive of southwestern Maine is Mount Washington, the tallest peak in New England.
